Article #1 on Creation & Science
“Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?” – Isa. 43:13
God alone was working miracles of creation in the timeless expanse of eternity before Day #1. At this point, there was no dry land on planet Earth, nor was there any light. The newly created world was lifeless and uninhabitable. The surface of the Earth was completely covered with water.
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” – Gen. 1:2
As the Breath of God was blowing upon the face of the waters, it was then that the LORD simultaneously spoke a divine word of life (Jn. 1:1-18). Hence, Genesis 1:2-3 is a marvelous demonstration of 2 Timothy 3:16. A pronounced inhalation and exhalation of breath comes with the speaking divine words (Jn. 1:1-5).
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” – Gen. 1:3-5
Day #1 was spectacular to behold because the Angels watched the light of Heaven illuminate a dark world (Job 38:4-7). The sun, moon, and stars were not created until Day #4 (Gen. 1:14-19). Therefore, the light of Day #1 was a heavenly light that was coming directly from the Presence of God (1 Tim. 6:16; Ps. 104:1-2). The whole spectrum of visible Light is present in Heaven (Ezek. 1:28, Rev. 4:3, 10:1).
“Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who coverest Thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:” - Psalm 104:1-2
“Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” – 1 Tim. 6:15-16
No man decks himself with majesty and excellency like God (Job 40:9-13)! Literally, only God can wrap Himself in beams of light as earthly kings are clothed in royal garments. The apostle John called the light of Day #1, “the true Light” (Jn. 1:9, 1 Jn. 2:8). He gave further commentary in an Epistle, saying, “God is Light” (1 Jn. 1:5). Of course, he came to this understanding by hearing Jesus Christ say, “I am the Light of the World” (Jn. 8:12; Jn. 3:19-21, 12:35-36, 46). Literally, the light of day on Day#1 was coming from “the Day star” of the New Testament (2 Peter. 1:19; Jn. 8:12, 9:5, 12:44-50). John 1:1-5 provides a dogmatic interpretation of Genesis 1:3-5.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” – John 1:1-5
Have you seen the sunrise? The dawn of creation in Genesis 1:3-5 is only exceeded by the dawn of the salvation in John 1:1-5. The Gospel of John presents to readers Jesus Christ as the life, and the light of life; and this divine light shines with love! This is the resounding testimony of the beginning in the paradise of Eden. Our benevolent Creator made all things “good”. Reflecting on this, John repeatedly referred to “the beginning” of the Book of Genesis while speaking of the spiritual essence and character of God in the Epistle of 1st John (1 Jn. 1:1, 2:7, 13, 14, 24, 3:8, 11, 2 Jn. 1:5, 6). “God is Light”, John declared (1 Jn. 1:5). “God is love”, John interpreted (1 Jn. 4:16). This is the message we have heard from the beginning. The presence of Deity is the Illuminator (2 Cor. 4:4-6)! This needs to be understood physically and spiritually.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” - James 1:17
Physically, on Day #1, the light of God exceeded “the brightness of the sun” (Acts 26:13). Seeing that this light was coming directly from the Presence of God, it stands to reason that it was unlimited in power and glory. It shined with an inescapable brightness that vanquished all darkness! In other words, the light had no variableness or shadow of turning (James 1:17). When God said, “Let there be light: and there was light” (Gen. 1:3), the light that began to shine permeated everything. Presumably, the light traveled everywhere, and it illuminated everything in all directions, without being confined to a straight line. Light permeated everything at the dawn of creation, like how it will permeate everything at the dawn of the new creation (Rev. 21:22-25, 22:3-5, Isa. 60:19).
“…And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof…And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.” – Rev. 21:22-25
“…And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” – Rev. 22:3-5
“The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.” – Isa. 60:19
Therefore, to prevent the total illumination of everything by the power and glory of divine light, “God divided the light from the darkness” (Gen. 1:4). God acted to reduce the power and limit the glory of the light in the creation of darkness. “I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.” (Isa. 45:7). The dividing of light from darkness is an important exploit of creation that deserves our attention! Because this limited the glory of this light to allow for variableness and shadows of turning (James 1:17). The components of light and darkness were thus fixed to bring about the lifecycle of day and night on earth. Nevertheless, there are still many mysteries about the behavior of light and darkness, even in the current circumstances.
“Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof, That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof? Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?” - Job 38:19-21
Scientists still don’t understand “the way” that sunlight propagates itself through the vacuum of outer space. Meanwhile, the darkness of the second Heaven is full of mysteries! Scientists have observed light bending, twisting, and disappearing while interacting with or getting caught in places of darkness in the form of black holes. According to the double-slit experiment, light is a wavelength. However, depending on the circumstances, light also has the properties of a particle. Scientists refer to this as the wave-particle duality of light.
